Glen Grant wurde 1840 von James und John
Grant gegründet und gehört zu den am meisten unterschätzten
Destillen. Insbesondere alte Glen Grants sind sehr komplex,
fruchtig und reichhaltig. Dieses
Fass wurde am 24.02.1972 destilliert und hat uns sofort begeistert…. Dieser typische, alte Glen Grant zeigt an der Nase sofort Aromen von reifen Früchten, exotischen Gewürzen und Waldhonig. Danach kommt etwas erdiger Torf (woodsmoke), Schokolade und Rosine - das alles ist wunderbar würzig-süß miteinander verbunden, sehr elegant, vielschichtig und lecker! Im Mund erfolgt ein kerniger, kräftiger Antritt mit reichlich süßen, exotischen Gewürzen, Waldhonig, Kakaopulver, zartbitter Schokolade und dunklen Früchten (Pflaume-Zimt). Eine wunderbare Aromen-Explosion im Mund und ein tolles Wechselspiel aus süßen und würzigen Aromen! Das Finish ist sehr lang auf der würzig-süßen Seite mit einer tollen Wiederholung aller Aromen und einem erfrischenden Abschied. Achtung: dieser tolle, alte Glen Grant benötigt einige Zeit zum Atmen, damit sich alle Aromen entfalten können - Warten lohnt sich! Diese Abfüllung ist ausverkauft und nur noch als 5cl Miniatur Flasche (für 15 Euro) verfügbar. Das Frontlabel schmückt ein Aquarell von Kunstmaler Horst Manthée (Hotte), es zeigt eine aktuelle Ansicht der Glen Grant Distillery. A nice honeyed fruitiness again but more dried fruits this time, with marmalade and syrup . The nutty element is slightly bigger, with coffee notes and caramel. Interestingly, the hints of new oak that I pick up make me think of old single grains while the mint / eucalyptus reminds me of certain bourbons. Very lively and entertaining. Water brings out a little vanilla. Mouth: more alcohol, more punch. It shows the same oranges, tangerines and yellow plums. Compared to the Thosop bottling, more spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, more pepper) and slightly less fruit. More balanced and more fruity with a little water. Finish: long, spicy with a hint of oak. Another great Glen Grant. This one is slightly more oaky and spicy, which adds nice notes on the nose but also a certain dryness on the palate. Difficult to make a choice - I guess the higher strength is the main difference. Add a little water and they’re quite similar. Score: 89/100. |

Colour: full gold. Nose: starts unusually fresh for a 38yo whisky, on
both fresh and dried fruits. Ripe apples, a little maple syrup, stewed
peaches and apricots, butter pears, a little coffee, vanilla oranges,
honey, sultanas… And just hints of new oak (newly sawn). With water:
more notes of fresh herbs, mint, a little dill… Mouth (neat): I like it
better then on the nose when it’s undiluted, it’s rather fruitier and
kind of luscious, as old Glen Grants can be. Quite some kumquats and
orange marmalade, mirabelles, hints of blood oranges and then quite
some spices. Pepper, ginger, cardamom, nutmeg, cinnamon (and bitter
chocolate)… With water: smoother, waxier and more orangey and honeyed.
Finish: long, clean, a tad more citrusy and gingery. Comments:
